Initial Checks
When repairing somebody else's Playstation test it first and make sure it
works (apart from the spindle of course!).
CAUTION:
Disconnect all cables and remove any discs prior to
disassembly. Mains electricity can be fatal. Keep track of where the screws
and internal components go as the machine is disassembled.
Removal of the console cover:
Remove the mains supply lead to the Playstation then remove the front cover
by unscrewing the screws underneath the Playstation.
Removal of the Laser Unit Assembly:
Once the front cover is removed remove the small white plug from the board
to the laser unit.
Remove the ribbon cable from the laser unit to the board by gently pulling
the ribbon straight up. (Note: On the older style board this ribbon cable is
clipped in and the clip should be released before pulling the ribbon)
Once the two cables from the laser to the board are removed lift the laser
off and place your console and screws somewhere safe.
Dismantling the Laser Unit:
Move the lens into its mid position, otherwise the lens will get in the way
of the cover if it is left in its rest position. Now follow the directions
below, note that when taking the cover off little plastic "lugs" need to be
free of the main frame in order for the cover to be removed

Once the cover is off you can prise the broken spindle off
of the motor using a flat blade screwdriver, but before you do this, make a
note of how far the current spindle is on the motor shaft. Fit the new
spindle and push onto the motor shaft so that the spindle is positioned
exactly as your original spindle was on the motor shaft.
Re-assembly:
Re-assembly is to be done exactly in reverse order, but you do not have to
move the lens back to its original position, the Playstation console will do
this when power is next applied to the system.
